As volunteer, you can gain new experiences and insights, and learn new and transferable skills, whilst knowing you are making a valuable contribution. 

We’re looking for friendly, enthusiastic and personable volunteers who will give them a warm welcome when they walk in the door.

What activities will I be involved in?

  • Greeting visitors through the door: including new families, supporters, Sunday Funday customers or stakeholders.
  • Making sure people are signed into the building.
  • Answering telephone enquiries and transferring them through to the correct member of staff. 
  • Occasional basic administration duties. 
  • Signposting new members to a member of the team who will lead on tours. 

What skills and ability will I need to fulfil this role?

  • Friendly and enthusiastic approaches towards the work of The Yard. 
  • Personable and is flexible to changes that might occur. 
  • Great communication skills and understanding of the importance of customer service. 
  • Basic computer skills would be a bonus but are not essential. 
  • The ability to relate well face to face to people of all ages and to help put them at ease. 

How much time will I need to offer? 

  • Ideally one day a week for a few hours depending on the services and sessions.

What ongoing learning and support/guidance will I receive? 

  • It is important to us that you feel part of The Yard community and we want you to feel confident and happy in your volunteering role. You will be invited to come along to a volunteer induction which will cover the basics on Health and Safety, Child Protection, Data Protection and organisational values of The Yard.
  • We run a number of training courses in house, which you are welcome to attend so that you are developing your knowledge of the services we provide.
  • Our team will be in regular contact and will meet you as often as is needed to provide support and guidance.
  • Training and support on the specifics of the reception role.

Is there anything else I should know?

  • You have to be at least 16 years old to apply for this role. 
  • This role will involve undertaking physical work.
  • We will pay your out of pocket expenses in line with The Yard’s volunteer policy.
  • Able to pass a Protection of Vulnerable Groups (PVG) check or Disclosure as appropriate.
