As volunteer, you can gain new experiences and insights, and learn new and transferable skills, whilst knowing you are making a valuable contribution.

Our collection can volunteers are responsible for placing and collecting fundraising cans from a range of sites including cafes, pubs and shops. We also would love your help in identifying new locations where we can place our cans. If you are wanting a role which is more flexible and ad hoc this is perfect for you!

What activities will this role involve?

  • Identifying suitable locations for collecting cans to be placed in your local community.
  • Placing and servicing the collection cans (this involves checking that they are sealed and labelled correctly).
  • Emptying cans and counting the money.
  • Banking the money.
  • Keep an accurate record of all outgoing and incoming cans.

What skills and ability will I need to fulfil this role?

  • Accurate counting skills
  • Great organisational and communication skills.
  • Friendly and passionate about The Yard and your local community.

How much time will I need to offer?

  • This is a flexible volunteer role and you will be responsible for your own time. Ideally, we like cans to be serviced every 3-6 months.

Where will I be based?

  • Out in the local community.

What are the benefits to me?

  • Learning new skills and meeting new people.
  • Getting more involved in a local charity and helping us continue to provide a fun and safe place for disabled children to play and make friends.
  • Having fun!
  • Keeping active and involved with local causes in the community.

What ongoing learning and support/guidance will I receive?

  • It is important to us that you feel part of The Yard community and we want you to feel confident and happy in your volunteering role. You will be invited to come along to a short induction that will cover the basics on Health and Safety, Children Protection, Cash handling, Data Protection and Representing The Yard in the community.
  • We run a number of training courses in house that you are welcome to attend so that you can develop your knowledge of the services we provide.
  • Our fundraising team will be in regular contact and will meet you as often as is needed to provide support and guidance.

What are the benefits to The Yard's families?

  • By raising money for The Yard you are helping us bring fun and friendship to disabled children, young people and their families.
  • As a growing charity we are looking to continue to increase our awareness in the community, driven by volunteers and people who understand how important it is to be part of a community.

Is there anything else I should know?

  • For insurance purposes, collection can coordinators must be aged 18 or over.
  • We will pay your out of pocket expenses in line with The Yard’s volunteer policy.
  • Able to complete a basic Disclosure Scotland application.
  • Read our transparency statement for volunteer applicants.

What is the next step?
