Who we are Blog DTTO team scoop top volunteering honour Our dedicated DTTO (drug testing and treatment order) team were today (Wednesday 7 June 2017) awarded an Inspiring Volunteer Award from Volunteer Scotland. Led by Margaret Simpson, the team has supported The Yard for over five years. Without their support, we would not be able to keep our playground so clean and well maintained. They donate many hours of selfless toil, asking for nothing in return, but receiving our great admiration and thanks. The DTTO team regularly carry out essential maintenance tasks at The Yard Edinburgh. These range from digging over and disinfecting our large sandpits, to cleaning our soft play equipment, which gets a lot of use by our members. The team bring an enthusiasm and energy to their work, inspired by their knowledge of our children and families. The work they do has a great impact on our environment, helping to keep it clean and safe for our children. When the children come into the playground after the sand has been freshly turned over and cleaned, they rush over to dig their "grand canyons" and make their fantasy sandcastles, exploring sensory play and learning through control of water and different materials. Understanding a little bit about the struggles and triumphs experienced by disabled children helps give the DTTO workers perspective, and they can empathise with them and their own personal battles. Ultimately, this project helps both groups thrive and make changes in their lives in a supportive environment that values them as individuals. To top it all, the team even find time to fund raise for The Yard, despite often having difficulties in their own daily lives. Through working on the project, they form friendships and are introduced to a range of support networks. Our team at The Yard work very closely with the DTTO team, which has helped foster mutual appreciation and understanding. We really appreciate all the work they have done over the last five years and this award is well-deserved. Edinburgh’s Inspiring Volunteer Awards reflects the exceptional range of organisations and individuals working in the city’s vibrant charity and non-profit sectors.
