The Management Board
Joan Fraser (Chair)
Joan spent most of her career in the Scottish Executive, mainly in education where her experience included developing policy for children with additional support needs. She has been a chief executive of a voluntary organisation, is a Board Member of Edinburgh Voluntary Organisation Council and NHS Health Scotland and a member of the Visiting Committee for Polmont Young Offenders Institution. She joined The Yard Board in November 2006 but stood down from April 2009 to January 2010 to be acting Chief Executive.
Fiona McPhail (Treasurer)
Fiona is a chartered accountant with a major bank, where she runs a finance team within the operations division. Fiona is involved in children’s work at nearby Bellevue Chapel which uses The Yard on a Sunday for its youth groups. She joined the Board in February 2009.
Morag Meldrum
Morag is a former teacher with a background in learning support and additional support needs, latterly as Deputy Head at the Royal Blind School. She started coming to The Yard as a teacher with her class from Royal Blind School in 2002. She joined the Board in 2005..
Joy Blakeney
Joy is a former occupational therapist with wide experience in the treatment of children with additional support needs. She worked both in health and local government settings as well as for Capability Scotland for 20 years. She joined the Board in 1986 and is a founder member.
Claire Coleman
Claire’s background is in primary and further education. She also ran an after-school education service in North Edinburgh for 5-14 year olds, including children with additional support needs. Currently employed in career guidance and employability training, she joined the Board in June 2008.
Iain McGill
Iain is a director of an agency providing social sector staff across Scotland. He is also a Community Councilor and a prospective Parliamentary candidate and has roles as a player, manager and referee in the world of football. He started volunteering at The Yard nearly 20 years ago and joined the Board in January 2007.
Ian Vann
Ian Vann has worked for most of his career as a geologist with BP. Following his retirement in 2007, he became a Visiting Professor in Geosciences at Princeton University. He is currently a non-executive director of Serica Energy PLC, Toreador Resources Corp, and Spectraseis AG, and a Senior Associate of Wood Mackenzie Ltd, Ian has extensive experience at a senior management level. He joined the Board at The Yard in February 2010.
Margaret Westwood
Margaret is the Senior Play Development Officer for the City of Edinburgh Council with responsibility for Edinburgh’s Play Strategy. She has 20 years experience of play management. She was a co-opted member of The Yard’s Board in her role as Grants Officer from 2000 until 2009 when she was seconded to The Yard as acting CEO, returning to the Board in February 2010. Margaret is the International Secretary of the International Play Association, chaired Play Scotland for five years from 2005 to 2009, and is a Trustee of the Nancy Ovens Trust.
